Riley and his brother were eager to enter the contest and decided to focus on firefighters. While watching his brother go first with his mom&#8217;s camera, Riley thought of a different perspective. When it was his turn, he decided to get down on the ground and photograph firefighters from a kid\u2019s vantage point.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apparently my brain was working pretty well that day and I came up with this cool idea. And, it worked!&#8221; Riley said.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_13152\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13152\" class=\"wp-image-13152 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/jonathan_petrini-3.jpg\" alt=\"T.C. Williams junior Jonathan Morgan Petrini<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T.C. Williams junior <\/span>Jonathan Morgan Petrini <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">won the Music Composition category (high-school division) with his piece, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaleidoscope<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jonathan, who plays both the piano and violin, says composing comes naturally to him. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I\u2019m writing music, I don\u2019t need a piano, I hear it in my head. I have an idea and I just build on it.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last summer he attended a High School Composition Intensive program at Boston Conservatory at Berklee and was tasked to write a piece for a string quartet. After a 36-hour stretch of writing and with just five hours of sleep, he wrote <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaleidoscope<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this piece, the melody is reflected and transformed by the other instruments, rotating like shifting colors in a kaleidoscope,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking ahead to college, Jonathan is leaning toward studying engineering or music, as he likes both math and music. He has a hopeful eye on Juilliard and the University of Virginia, but he says it\u2019s too soon to say.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give Jonathan\u2019s winning piece a listen. It\u2019s performed here by the Worcester Chamber Music Society:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/videopress.com\/embed\/1mod3EGg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe> <script src=\"https:\/\/videopress.com\/videopress-iframe.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before advancing to the National Reflections contest, both students progressed from winning contests for their schools, the Alexandria PTA Council, the Northern Virginia PTA District, and the Virginia State PTA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each year, about 300,000 students nationwide create artwork in six different arts categories to compete in the program. This was the program&#8217;s 50th anniversary year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next year&#8217;s theme will be &#8220;Look Within.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/videopress.com\/videopress-iframe.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Charles Barrett first grader Riley Zwiselsberger and T.C.
